5 steps to achieve your goals – the easy way!

Aug 27, 2020

Achieving your goals is possible.

You know that and hear it all the time.

But how do you do it?

You might have a vague idea about what you want your life to look like, i.e. second home, new car or lots of travel but how do you get from where you are to where you want to be without losing your mind or burning out along the way?

I have managed to achieve some big goals over the years;

  • Two homes, inc a Quarrymans cottage in Wales
  • Two podcasts over the years
  • An online business so I can work from anywhere
  • Meeting a wonderful man of my dreams – some of you may know him as Christina from the free coworking sessions that I ran during lockdown 😉
  • Lots of Travel around Europe and living abroad
  • Becoming debt free & financially independent

Try these 5 steps to achieve your goals when you know what you want to achieve but can’t figure out the how;

1. Clarity & Vision

It’s so important to get clear on how you want your life to look. In 5 years, 3 years AND 12 months from now.

Get really specific about what’s going on, where are you living and who are you with.

What are you doing for work, what are you wearing and who are you spending your days with?

Sink into that day dream regularly and visualise it happening. Get those emotions and feelings rushing around your body and let that beam take over your smiling happy face.

Get clear on what you want your life to look like and visualize every day your ideal life. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between reality and what you’re imagining so it’s only a matter of time before your imagined life is a reality – cool eh?

2. Break it down

Now you know what you want your life to look like and have broken it down into the years; your next step is to begin with your first 12 months. Then you need to break that down even further into a 3 month/90 day/12 week period – more on that in a mo.

  • What are the outcomes you want to make happen and want to achieve in that year? And at the end of every 90 day period?
  • Brainstorm what you can do to make that happen?
  • Be aware when setting goals of what is in your control and what is out of your control.

E.g. If your goal is 6 1-1 clients in the next 6 months;

  • what inspired action can you take towards making that a reality?
  • Would you contact your previous clients?
  • Write a blog or email with an offer at the end?

You may not be in control of the goal coming to fruition, but you are in control of the action you take, the content you create and the outreach you do.

Leave the rest up to the powers that be. Your job is to meet the universe halfway by taking action.

3. Make a Plan

You need to make a plan – without a plan, nothing is going to get done!

  • Now it’s time to break that down again into a goal for each quarter in the year.
  • Set your monthly outcomes for each quarter that will help you achieve your overall 90 day goal.
  • You can use post its, a whiteboard, or create your own process in a system like Asana or Trello.
  • Write down the action steps that you need to take to achieve those outcomes?

Then it’s easy to break those down into weekly actions.

4. Schedule & Measure your progress

It’s easy to get swept away with the day to day of your business and get caught in the weeds. When you’ve done your marketing, served your clients and dealt with any curveballs life has thrown at you, the day has largely disappeared.

You need to schedule in a time to work on your goals with no interruptions. Get the flight mode on, let the people you live with know that you’re in full on focus mode for 2-3 hours. Put this in your schedule every week at the same time.

You also need to measure your progress in terms of how much you get done each week. I track my progress by stats. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, especially if you struggle with maths, like me, but it’s a key step that makes the difference to achieving your goals or not and it’s easy once you know how but you may prefer to tick off a list. Whatever system you use, measure what you’re getting done.

5. Accountability

Belong to a community or accountability group where you can get support and encouragement to make sure you’re making progress on your goals.

More importantly, somewhere you can get help when you reach that ‘urgh’ point half way through the quarter, because it will happen.

I’ve lost count of the number of goals where I have changed the course of action en route to my outcome because it didn’t feel good. You will hit those moments where you need to reassess what’s working and what’s not and that’s where you need the support.
